| In
1969, Jim Bostick considered starting his own paving company. He had
worked three summers for a neighbor who specialized in asphalt paving.
In learning the ropes, Jim believed he could succeed on his own. At
the young age of 23, with a lot of determination and only $1,675, Jim
started his own company and put his name behind it. “I mostly repaired
pot holes in residential areas.” recalled Jim “I didn’t have any employees
or equipment. I did most of the work myself and rented equipment when
I needed it.” He proudly mentioned that he paid cash for everything
as he went along. |
As
business improved, the necessity for additional staff increased.
A neighbor, Jerry Hamlin, had recently become a friend of Bostick.
At the time, Jerry worked for Uniroyal Tires and was about to
be transferred to New York. Aware of Jerry’s desire to stay in
California, Jim offered him a position at his company. He accepted,
and in time became a co-owner of the company. With Jim and Jerry
joined at the helm, the company quickly moved from residential
jobs to commercial projects. By owning a complete line of updated
and maintained equipment, the company has, according to Jim, eliminated
all subcontracting and is able to maintain the highest quality
standards.
An integral component of their success is the
company’s 50 plus dedicated employees, who are considered as much
a part of the company as the owners and decision-makers. “We offer
our people shared ownership in the company. Because of this, they
are significantly more dedicated to the products they provide.”
stated Jim.
Operating for 40 years is an accomplishment
and the owner’s current goal is to expand the business to cover
all of California. “We want to be able to service everyone who
needs our expertise.” said Jim. Headquartered in Anaheim, California,
the company has two California locations. |
